To build a government service, you need to understand the people who will use it. To write a policy which solves a problem, you need an in-depth understanding of how it will impact people’s lives. It all comes down to starting with user need.
Join this free online event to learn about user-centred design in government. Discover how to approach getting to know your users, the value of co-design and using feedback to make services better.
You’ll hear from user-centred design experts during a panel discussion on developing services that meet the public’s needs. There'll also be a Q&A session for you to ask questions and learn how to apply these ideas.
This event is for all public servants. You'll gain insights into making services more effective and meaningful for the people who use them.
This event will be recorded and the recording will be sent to all registrants. It may also be made available on Apolitical's platform for other members of our community to enjoy.

Christopher Taylor, currently the Head of User-Centred Design for UK Home Office, is responsible for driving user-centred design approaches and supporting a community of over 300 practitioners. Chris has over 15 years of experience in digital, specialising in user-centred design and strategic leadership in the public and private sector. When not working, he very much enjoy movies, running (very slowly) and creating art – in particular making his first comic book.
Alice Carter, East Africa Director for Brink, a consultancy that combines innovation and behavioural science to tackle big global challenges. Before Brink Alice worked in the UK civil service on various digital transformation projects, and most recently helping policy advisors apply design-thinking to the biggest challenges in the UK’s Ministry of Justice. Through her work at Brink, she is continuing to explore the role of government as an innovator, and how user-centred approaches can catalyse change.
Lynne Roberts, Head of Product and Experience in Defra’s digital delivery function. Lynne began her career in digital publishing, not realising at the time that the weekly cycle of planning, multidisciplinary collaboration, iteration and review was the perfect training ground for agile digital delivery. She joined a central government department as a contractor as it transitioned to GOV.UK and went on to GDS, supporting devolved editors across government. Falling in love with the challenge and complexity of government services and the multidisciplinary environment, she became a Civil Servant in 2016, leading a content design team at the Home Office before moving to Defra in 2018.
