The AI in Government Community is a collaborative space designed for conversations, insights, ideas and resources on the use of AI in government from your peers across the global public service. This community is open to all Apolitical members.
Event Description
AI tools are now being used across government to support writing, analyse data and inform decisions. But as their use expands, so do the questions — about safety, fairness, and accountability — that many public servants are still figuring out how to navigate.
Public servants have a vital role in ensuring that AI is used in ways that protect fairness, privacy and public trust. This event will explore the real world risks public servants need to understand, including bias, privacy, accountability, transparency and misuse, and what responsible use looks like in practice across different public service contexts.
You will leave with clearer ways to assess the risks of AI tools, ask the right questions before adopting them, and make safer, more informed decisions about when and how to use AI in your role.

Ray Bell, the AI/ML Product Director for the State of Maryland. Ray bridges the gap between complex data science and actionable public policy. Ray focuses on AI solutions that modernize government services, improve efficiency, and solve large-scale problems for the public sector. With a deep technical foundation in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and predictive modeling, Ray has spent his career implementing novel data strategies across diverse industries—including Defense, Hospitality, and Oil & Gas. Outside of the data world, Ray serves his community as a volunteer firefighter at Station 17 in Anne Arundel County Maryland.
Lindsey Washburn, who is a strategic leader driving responsible AI adoption across sectors. With 15+ years scaling impact and shaping policy, she specializes in building systems and partnerships that enable ethical technology deployment and advance AI in the public interest. As Director of Engagement at Assessed Intelligence, Lindsey advises organizations on AI governance, risk management, and responsible implementation—aligning innovation with regulatory readiness and institutional accountability. Lindsey previously led AI governance and climate action in local government and scaled global operations as COO of an international organization. Her work is grounded in the belief that effective governance enables innovation while strengthening democratic institutions and building public trust.
Prateek Sibal, Programme Specialist at the Digital Policies and Digital Transformation Section of the Communication and Information Sector at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. In this framework, he leads the Sector’s work on artificial intelligence and digital transformation with a focus on capacity building for the executive, legislative and the judicial branches of government. His work spans research, advocacy, policy advice and capacity building for the governance of digital technologies.
