Operating Edmonton: A centralized AI solution for municipal asset analysis

The Problem

Data regarding building costs, usage, asset health and operational areas are scattered across multiple systems, making it difficult to analyze asset performance and infrastructure needs.

The Solution

Operating Edmonton is a centralized data inventory, integrating APIs, Open Data and Tableau Extracts to consolidate building data, service locations and operational factors for municipal leaders. It is built using open source tools within existing budget.

The Impact

Enables data-driven decisions for priority lists, infrastructure growth, renewal and site repurposing by providing consolidated insights into maintenance costs and operational workload. The project enables the City to perform asset financial analysis and predict future growth over a decade-long horizon (2023–2032).

Lessons Learned

Sometimes solutions intended for one purpose can serve another. Operating Edmonton began as a strategy implementation around operational service yards, and became a support framework for infrastructure planning citywide.
