Anomaly Detection: An AI solution for proactively identifying anomalies in security incidents

The Problem

Corporate Security Advisors need a way to quickly identify unusual spikes in incident counts to proactively manage security issues.

The Solution

This was the first instance of AI at the City of Edmonton. The tool proactively identifies anomalies in Corporate Security incident records and alerts Advisors to unusual incident spikes. Built using open-source tools within the existing budget.

The Impact

Proactive identification of anomalies and unusual spikes in incident counts improved overall incident management and response. Operational since 2012, this solution resulted in a 52% reduction and $60,000 cost avoidance in the first years and is still operational to this day.

An early anomaly detection pilot using simple tools that had an outsized impact.
