The Life in Government Community is a collaborative space designed for Apolitical members to connect with peers in the global public service and ask and answer questions on life in government.
Event Description
The most powerful learning often happens through the people around us. Whether it's a spontaneous conversation, a mentoring relationship or a shared challenge in a community of practice, the connections we form at work can transform our careers and sense of purpose.
For public servants, networks are more than social circles—they're engines of growth, collaboration and wellbeing. From picking up new skills to finding the right role, the right connection at the right time can unlock opportunities and foster belonging in complex and demanding environments.
Join this event to hear experienced civil servants discuss how connections and communities have shaped their journeys, and how to replicate their successes. We’ll explore how learning partnership can lead to skill development, open doors to new roles, and how connections can invoke a sense of purpose. Walk away with inspiration and ideas you can act on.
This event will take place on Zoom. Joining instructions will be displayed once you register. The event will be recorded and the recording will be sent to all registrants. It may also be made available on Apolitical's platform for other members of our community to enjoy.

Jessica Batt, Jessica, is the Communities of Practice Lead for the Cabinet Office Transforming Public Procurement Programme. Jessica is dedicated to building empathetic, commercially focused Communities of Practice, where public sector procurement professionals can collaborate, share best practices, identify common challenges, and foster continuous learning. Transforming how professionals engage, share knowledge, and grow together. Transforming Public Procurement (TPP) Communities of Practice has built a flourishing commercial community across the public sector, with over 11,000+ active participants on the Communities of Practice portal (GCC) and more than 33,000+ attendees across 58+ online meetups. Jessica is on secondment from the Metropolitan Police Service. Outside of work, she enjoys staying active through outdoor activities, baking and spending time with family and friends.
Steve Sulley, Steve is a Communities of Practice Lead at the Cabinet Office Transforming Public Procurement Programme. He focuses on developing the communications and marketing programme to support the 11,000 strong community, with a particular emphasis on fostering and engaging with local fora. He has spent over 30 years in marketing and communications roles in the public and private sector. Outside of work Steve is a keen cyclist and sports fan.
