Event Description
Navigating the (often complicated) intricacies of artificial intelligence requires more than just technological expertise; it needs governance that takes innovation, ethics and safety seriously. To do this, countries from Spain to Singapore, Brazil and Belgium are designing regulations, including ‘regulatory sandboxes’.
“What are regulatory sandboxes?”
Like a children’s sandbox, a regulatory sandbox is designed to facilitate play. They’re controlled environments where it’s possible to safely experiment with AI implementation.
This line-up of experts, from some of the nations at the forefront of AI regulation and creating regulatory sandboxes, will share their insights with you. We'll be covering key challenges, strategies and impacts of regulatory frameworks on AI development.
After a series of presentations showcasing initiatives from Norway, the UK, Brazil, Colombia and the rest of South America, we'll open the floor to your questions.

Armando Guio Español, Armando Guio Español, a lawyer with degrees from Universidad de los Andes, Harvard Law School, and the University of Oxford. He advises global entities on AI governance and ethics and is the Executive Director of the Network of Internet and Society Centers at Harvard University.
Kerry Shehan, Head of AI Policy for a UK Government AI Regulation Taskforce, is recognised in the UK and globally for innovation leadership and the development and application of technologies, including AI. Kerry was formerly head of service development and innovation where she designed and worked on implementation of new organisational and service models (digitisation, automation, AI, upskilling and culture change). Kerry was a finalist for the AI-Conics AI for Implementor of the Year, is a former strategic advisor to the Alan Turing institute on the development of its latest 5 Year Strategy and is listed in the top 100 women in AI Ethics globally. Kerry is a passionate advocate of social mobility in AI and provides free coaching to those from under represented groups.
Diego Carvalho Machado, a Data Protection Specialist at the Brazilian Data Protection Authority (Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados). He holds a PhD in Private Law from the State University of Rio de Janeiro and is an Associate Professor of Private Law at the Federal University of Viçosa (on leave). He is also a member of the VULNERA Scientific Network.
