Governing for the Worst El Niño on Record

This summer, wildfires and extreme heat put governments under pressure across continents: more than 669,000 hectares burned across the EU, Indonesia lost 896,000 hectares to fire and a Californian state report found that extreme heat alone has cost nearly 460 lives and $7.7 billion over the past decade.

Extreme heat is putting growing pressure on emergency response, infrastructure, public health and essential services. Public servants need to make decisions before, during and after a crisis, often across departments and with limited time and resources.

This event will explore what this summer demanded of governments, how lessons can travel across borders and what needs to change in planning, coordination, policy and investment to build resilience before the next shock.
