Event Description
As the 2030 deadline for the Agenda for Sustainable Development approaches, progress on global gender equality has been slower than many hoped. The scale of the gender equality challenge for governments demands that we come together to share ideas and fuel innovation, celebrating and replicating successful work from around the world.
Incredible public servants are driving change and gender equality in every corner of the globe, experimenting with new policies and delivering for citizens. This panel event will feature members of Apolitical’s “50 Gender Equality Gamechangers 2024” and shed light on the work that often doesn't make the main stage.

Amílcar Sanatan, a dynamic force in violence prevention and response. He is an advisor to the Caribbean Development Bank's Future Leaders Network and a Steering Committee Member of the Association of Youth Development Professionals of Trinidad and Tobago. Amílcar has been instrumental in initiatives targeting marginalised, high-need, urban communities across Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Belize, and St. Lucia. He is also an award-winning poet and PhD student, using his art to shed light on the inequalities faced by the vulnerable and poor in the Caribbean. Importantly, he consistently uses media platforms to amplify the voices of communities, advocate for social justice causes, and champion youth and gender equality. Amílcar exemplifies trailblazing youth within the national community, showcasing a deep commitment to social justice and gender equality.
Lisa Williams, who works with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) member governments. She is responsible for providing strategic direction for promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls in development policies, programmes and investments. — Lisa has been instrumental in developing key international standards, including the recent Development Assistance Committee (DAC) Recommendation on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of All Women and Girls in Development Co-operation and Humanitarian Assistance, the DAC Recommendation on Ending Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment, and the OECD Recommendation on Mitigating Corruption Risks.
Karen Shippey, who holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental and Geographical Science from the University of Cape Town, has over 25 years of work experience. Whilst her post-graduate studies focussed on Sustainable Development, her work experience took her into the world of infrastructure development, working as an Environmental Assessment Practitioner. Ms Shippey joined the Western Cape Government in 2011 and became Chief Director: Environmental Sustainability for the Western Cape in 2015. This role saw her providing oversight and leadership across the Provincial Climate Change, Green Economy, Sustainability, Biodiversity and Coastal Management portfolios. Ms Shippey added the obligations of Departmental Strategic Gender and Human Rights Focal Point to her portfolio in 2017. This enriching work has challenged her to take a fresh view of the public sector gender mandates and obligations and to engage actively in awareness raising and policy reform. Ms Shippey was awarded with the Western Cape 2023 Service Excellence Award for Exemplary Public Service Leadership for her efforts in her Department and across the Province the field of Gender and Human Rights Mainstreaming.
