How to get a job as a human resources business partner

Apolitical has asked a diverse group of public servants to give us their career tips. In this article, Martine Gauthier explains what it takes, and what ambitious public servants starting out can expect in return, based on experience

What is your role in government, and how did you land in this job?

I am a human resources (HR) business partner for Fisheries and Oceans Canada. I am part of an energetic team that builds relationships, brands the organisation and implements innovative recruitment methods with a focus on creating solutions. I've been in this position for two years now. After trying different HR positions in various teams, I can now say I am at the right place.

What are the most important skills and competencies for someone who wants to excel in your field and why?

Business Acumen. Strong understanding of your business and HR activities and processes. Being able to read data and dashboards. Reporting and monitoring your projects. Connecting HR activities with your business challenges. A strong will to improve and innovate.

Client service. The main role of an HR Business Partner is to help senior management with any HR issues. Understanding your client's business and how it fits into the organisation, then helping them achieve their goals. Strategic thinking with tremendous communication and influence skills are invaluable.

Optimism. In an evolving society, with continuously changing processes and situations, being optimistic about change is a must. While interacting with others, having that emotional intelligence will bring you far. Plus, who wants to work with someone who's always complaining?

What is one thing that has surprised you most about working in this field?

The rigidity of the lengthy approval process. Be patient.

If you were speaking to a junior public servant interested in following in your footsteps, what is the one piece of advice you think would be most useful for them to know?
