Resilience is the ability to withstand unknown future challenges. Nobody can see the future. We can, however, predict the behaviours we’ll need to overcome the challenges the future throws at us. Judging by the last few years, these challenges will come thick and fast.
If you're equipped to overcome not-yet-understood challenges, you'll be able to continue to meet the needs of the public in trying times.
What behaviour do you need to work on to become more resilient? How have you responded to present-day pressure? Do you need to become bolder and more experimental, or do you need to invest in your collaboration skills?
We drew on conversations with public servants like you to understand what challenges they’re facing and how they’re responding. We also cracked open the Apolitical archives to understand how public service careers are evolving, and the approaches you can take to future-proof your career.
Take our new quiz to assess how you react to present pressures. Based on your response, we’ll suggest which behaviour you should focus on developing to future-proof yourself. There’s one thing we know for sure: there will be setbacks, no matter where you work. What do you need to work on to make sure that you get back up and try again?
You may warm to more than one answer, but please choose the option that best describes you.
The answer you get won’t be a perfect prescription, but it will help show you a direction you can lean in to make your career more resilient.
