Pulls together fire, transit, and crisis data to flag higher-risk locations.
The Drug Poisoning Outreach Dashboard was created to combat the sharp rise in drug-related emergencies in Edmonton -- an issue experienced in cities across North America.
By consolidating data from various municipal services (such as Fire Rescue, Edmonton Transit, and 24/7 Crisis Diversion) into a single, automated platform, the Drug Poisoning Dashboard provides actionable insights for frontline staff. The solution ingests partner demand (call for service) data and predicts a higher risk of overdose locations. The platform was built using open source tools within existing budget.
The Drug Poisoning Outreach Dashboard has had a significant operational and strategic impact since its launch in 2021, particularly in its ability to pinpoint extreme concentrations of public safety demand. By highlighting these "hot spots", the tool provides a clear picture of where teams should focus their efforts to potentially save more lives.
A central takeaway was that technical tools alone do not drive adoption. Success was significantly enhanced by hiring an Outreach Coordinator to act as a knowledge broker, translating complex data into actionable WhatsApp updates for over 20 organizations.
