Join us for this workshop and hear from experts and practitioners as they discuss public engagement around climate change, including what constitutes effective methods of communication, collaboration and engagement around policy interventions.
You’ll learn how practitioners facilitating public engagement around climate change are making sense of the complexity and uncertainty of climate change. You’ll also explore how to engage the public by designing for inclusion and justice, and enabling for experimentation and learning throughout the engagement process.
This workshop will draw from the Centre for Public Impact and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s groundbreaking new research, Public Engagement around Climate Change, which offers the most comprehensive understanding to date of how the public can be effectively engaged in the quest to net zero. Their case study compendium also shines a light on examples from around the world of pioneering practitioners who are leading the charge in engaging the public on a range of sustainability issues, offering important lessons on how we think about public engagement going forward.
You’ll learn how to:
- Understand the strengths and weaknesses of different types of public engagement
- Communicate with the public around climate change without oversimplifying the issue
- Build experimentation and learning into the public engagement process
- Design public engagement processes that are inclusive and just

Chandrima Padmanabhan, Senior Associate at CPI Europe, and leads the Centre for Public Impact’s work on public engagement around climate change. She has over eight years of specialised expertise in urban adaptation, climate resilience research and policy. She has liaised closely with policymakers, senior government officials, academia and civil society organisations across India, UK, and countries in the East African region, providing policy advice, coordinating multi-stakeholder projects and driving impactful communication.
Professor Rebecca Willis, Professor in Practice at Lancaster Environment Centre, where she holds a Fellowship in energy and climate governance. She is an Expert Lead for Climate Assembly UK, the Citizens’ Assembly established by the UK Parliament. Previously, she was a research fellow for the IGov project at the University of Exeter, investigating energy governance. In 2009 Rebecca founded Green Alliance’s Climate Leadership Programme, an initiative to support Members of the UK Parliament, and earlier served as Green Alliance’s Director.
Sebastian Sladek, Executive Board Member of the Elektrizitätswerke Schönau. He grew up and went to school in Schönau in the Black Forest. At his dining room table at home, he witnessed his parents and their friends taking a strong stand against nuclear energy, and eventually taking on operations of the Schönau power grid and founding Elektrizitätswerke Schönau (EWS) as a civil society. After his archaeological studies and subsequent excavation activities, he returned to Schönau and joined the EWS. Since 2011 he has been in a position of executive responsibility there, and since 2015 he has also been a member of the Executive Board. For the EWS eG he is responsible for the business unit "Politics and Communication".
