Build your skills and knowledge
Experiment with using AI to address real workplace needs. Be systematic, and consider how you’ll measure impact. Set a goal, and identify how and where you’ll share your results with others.
Build up a picture of uptake. This could involve collecting data on the use of AI applications and conducting user interviews to get feedback from colleagues on their attitudes or uses.
Combat fear and reluctance by discussing the real role of human skills when working with AI.
Explore and familiarise yourself with AI governance policies and procedures. This could involve policies on how to select and use AI tools and technologies, ethical considerations, and how to monitor and mitigate the risks of AI.
Carve out time for professional development. Diarise a chunk of time each week where you can take an Apolitical course, explore community articles, or anything else that aligns with your motivations.
Create a community of practice
Share this assessment with your line manager. Discuss your outcomes and strategise which priorities might align with your departmental objectives.
Connect with a community. Join online AI forums, communities, or discussion boards to engage in conversations with others interested in AI. Share knowledge, ask questions, and learn from others.
Make use of all the reading you’re doing by setting up an email which disseminates information about AI applications to your peers.
Create a community. Are there others in your department (or beyond) who are interested in approaches to AI? By forming a working group you might find you’re tackling the same problems and identifying opportunities to learn from and with each other.
