Build your skills and knowledge
Practise incorporating tech industry terms into your own writing and speech. Write short articles or give presentations that include these terms to become more comfortable using them.
Stay ahead by following emerging tech industry trends and terminology. Engage in discussions, webinars, or conferences.
Explore how APIs and Cloud services are used by governments around the world. How are they being used by our department? How might they be used in the future? Consider putting together a short presentation to share back to colleagues.
Get familiar with various approaches to addressing legacy systems, such as system migration, reengineering, or gradual modernisation. Is legacy technology impacting the work you do? What’s your government doing to address or mitigate against it?
Carve out time for professional development. Diarise a chunk of time each week where you can take an Apolitical course, explore community articles, or anything else that aligns with your motivations.
Create a community of practice
Share this assessment with your line manager. Discuss your outcomes and strategise which priorities might align with your departmental objectives.
Think carefully about who you work with. Can you identify anyone who might be a source of information or inspiration for further developing your knowledge, skills and abilities in the technology that underpins your government or department? An informal chat with a specialist colleague about their work could help bring the context to life.
