You often hear that governments must ‘build’ trust with stakeholders and citizens. But why is this important and what does it really mean in practice?
In this workshop you will explore the effects of trust and distrust, the foundational concepts of trust and gain insights on whether trust can be regained once it has been lost. You will also be able to ask questions and interact with others to explore trust issues in your own context.
You'll learn:
- How trust and distrust can affect your own behaviour and actions as well as those of your stakeholders
- The 7 signals of trustworthiness and how they contribute to the earning or losing of trust
- How trust is lost and how it can be regained
Who should watch:
This workshop is for anyone who wants to learn how they can earn trust and what to do to avoid distrust in their own public service context.

Hilary Sutcliffe, Director of London-based not-for-profit SocietyInside. Through her work on ethics and trust in policy, business and academia Hilary saw first hand the quite serious problems created by the jargon-filled language used by us all. Inspired by the C.R.A.P. framework devised by Canadian academic Professor Ian McCarthy she began to use this thinking in her work on building organisational and interpersonal trust. A natural Yorkshire tendency towards plain speaking, combined with decades of researching how to write more clearly for her own writing and presenting has given her insights and practical tips which she enjoys sharing to help individuals and organisations be better understood.
