The UK non-profit turning prisoners into programmers

Code4000, a UK non-profit, is teaching prisoners how to code so that they can find jobs when they leave, making them far less likely to reoffend. The low-cost model reconfigures a prison’s existing IT infrastructure and hires one full-time member of staff to teach prisoners from nine to five, every day. When the prisoners leave, Code4000 finds them work as professional developers. A similar project in California has almost 100 graduates, none of whom have reoffended—set against a typical recidivism rate of 60-70%.
