Schools in the British city of Bath are competing to reduce their energy consumption by using city council data to track their daily use. Energy Sparks, an online platform run by local tech volunteers, creates smart meters and visualisations for schools which show their energy use hour by hour. Each school receives points for its efforts and is ranked in a league table to encourage competition. Research has shown that such competitions can cut school energy consumption by 20%.
