This is the first week of a brand-new year, and I am excited to start fresh! I am also looking for a resolution that will actually last this time. Let’s be honest, mornings can be a chaotic scramble of emails, social media notifications, and the constant urge to check our phones. Are you tired of feeling rushed and overwhelmed in the mornings? Do you find yourself constantly checking your phone even before your feet hit the floor?

This year, let's reclaim our mornings and start the day with intention and purpose. The morning sets the tone for the entire day.In this post, I'll share how I plan to take charge of my days instead of letting them run me. Here are five key pointers to help you achieve a more mindful and productive morning routine:

  1. Break Free from the Phone Trap

Our phones have become an inseparable part of our lives, but they can easily hijack our mornings. To break free from the phone trap:

Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep. Establish a consistent sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine. Practice sleep hygiene like avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bed, and ensuring a same time to bed. Utilize your phone that restricts or silences notifications to minimize distractions. Some newer phones even offer a night mode that makes the screen black and white, reducing blue light exposure and promoting better sleep. Some people find that consuming lukewarm milk, which contains the amino acid tryptophan, may promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

Mindful Wake-Up: Resist the immediate urge to grab your phone. Instead, take a few deep breaths and practice gratitude. Start a gratitude journal by listing one thing you are grateful for each morning. Focus on consistently writing positive affirmations. Research has shown that listening to and reciting Sanskrit chants in the morning can improve brain health and vocal capabilities.

Social Media-Tea Detox: Use apps like App Blocker to schedule specific times for social media. This will prevent mindless scrolling and allow you to focus on more important tasks early in the day, such as preparing a healthy breakfast like a green smoothie or herbal tea with one tablespoon of Methi (Fenugreek) or Ajwain (Carom) seeds in lukewarm water sweetened with honey.

2. Master Your Google Calendar

A well-organized calendar is essential for a productive morning.

● Integrate Events: Keep your calendar updated with all appointments, deadlines, and personal commitments. Utilize the task feature to organize daily activities. For example, schedule laundry for Tuesdays and Thursdays during your lunch break. Combine household chores with your morning breaks to maximize your time.

● Combine Tasks: Pair less enjoyable tasks with activities you love. For example, listen to your favorite podcast while cooking a healthy breakfast. This makes mundane tasks more enjoyable and helps you stay motivated.

● Schedule Me Time: Block off time for relaxation, hobbies, and activities that bring you joy. This could include anything from reading a book to practicing yoga or spending time in nature. Prioritizing self-care will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

3. Embrace Frugal Living

Revisit the frugal living habits you may have developed during college.

● Revisit College Habits: Analyze your spending habits. Is it really necessary to buy coffee from Starbucks every day? Calculate the monthly cost and consider switching to making desi ginger masala chai at home while you get ready. Use the saved coffee money to invest in books, plants, or experiences that bring you joy.

Limit Eating Out: Enjoy occasional treats but prioritize home-cooked meals. Aim to cook at home for at least 21 days in a month. This not only saves money but also allows you to control the ingredients and create healthier meals. And it starts in the morning.

Family Dinners: Share meals with loved ones to strengthen bonds and save money. Make mealtimes a special occasion by sharing stories and connecting emotionally, transforming it into a self-care activity instead of rushed eating while on the go.

4. Consume News Mindfully

The constant barrage of news can be overwhelming and stressful.

Read, Don't Watch: Opt for reading news from credible sources to avoid the biases and sensationalism often found in television news. Reading allows for more focused attention and better comprehension.

Multitask Wisely: Read the news while exercising or commuting. This allows you to stay informed while making use of otherwise unproductive time. Take control of your weekdays. Instead of mindlessly watching TV, explore other options like visiting the library, engaging in a hobby, or spending time with loved ones.

Limit Couch Time: Reduce the amount of time spent passively watching television. Let this year plan your daily schedule as if binge watching is a big No. Take control of your weekdays. Instead go to the nearest library and get some books to dive in.

5. Prioritize Self-Care

Self-care is not a luxury, it's a necessity.

Incorporate Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness techniques such as meditation or deep breathing exercises to reduce stress and increase focus. If you are an immigrant living in a new country, consider reconnecting with long-lost friends, relatives, and colleagues this year. Prioritize genuine human connection by engaging in meaningful conversations with them on special occasions, rather than relying solely on impersonal WhatsApp text messages. Schedule regular calls or video chats with friends and family to nurture your relationships.

Move Your Body: Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, running, or yoga. Exercise releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects. Don't be intimidated by the prospect of immediately signing up for a gym membership. Start by incorporating daily health habits into your routine and gradually establish a consistent exercise schedule. This gradual approach will allow you to celebrate your small victories along the way.Consistency is key. Start with small changes and gradually incorporate them into your daily routine.

Spend Time in Nature: Connect with nature by spending time outdoors. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and increase creativity. When was the last time you went for a walk that wasn't related to shopping? When was the last time you volunteered at a community place to connect with people?

By implementing these simple yet effective strategies, you can reclaim your mornings and create a more mindful, productive, and fulfilling start to each day.

By setting realistic expectations, breaking down large goals into smaller, manageable steps, and practicing consistent self-compassion, you can increase your chances of success. Remember that setbacks are inevitable, but they don't define your journey. Learn from your challenges, adjust your approach, and keep moving forward.

You've got this!

Happy New Year!
