Why this matters
For the second year in a row, Apolitical will be celebrating innovative, groundbreaking teams that get the job done through our Public Service Team of the Year Awards. Though their work often goes unnoticed, we know that teams are at the heart of every effective government and are working hard every day to make people’s lives better.

How we selected the finalists
Our team received hundreds of nominations from teams all over the world. We then reviewed each nomination individually, and a panel of judges at Apolitical decided on a shortlist of teams for each category.
Citizen-Centred Innovation
This award celebrates teams with a focus on innovative policy putting citizens’ needs at the heart of their work. We’re looking for teams that have trialled or implemented policy that can deliver citizen-centric innovation in the public sector and ultimately make people’s lives better.
__The Boring Engine Room Award __
This award recognises that the teams tackling the most pressing issues don’t always have the flashiest titles. Cleaning spreadsheets, updating systems, or digitising documents may not be the most glamorous-sounding work, but it’s absolutely essential - we see you, and we salute you!
Climate Champions
This award will recognise a team or department that’s tackling the climate crisis head-on. This might be by fighting for an innovative new policy, implementing a great climate programme or developing a new internal system helping other public servants go green.
Digitising Public Services
This award is to celebrate teams that are helping bring government into the twenty-first century by digitising their services - whether it’s a new website for citizens, the implementation of digital IDs or a training programme for public servants to improve their technical skills.
Championing Equality
This award recognises teams or departments that are prioritising equality in their work, either in their policy development or in internal efforts. Our finalists are tackling equality broadly defined, from gender equality to racial equality to generational equality: these teams are helping level the playing field for others.
Evidence-Based Policy
This award celebrates teams or departments at the forefront of developing evidence-based policy, of any kind. These are the teams delivering measurable impact, using tangible evidence to make a difference.
Doing More with Less
We know that public servants are often being told to maximise their team or department’s impact, while minimising the amount of resources they receive. This award is to recognise the teams that are doing more with less - developing efficient policy solutions that effectively tackle pressing issues.
New Ways of Working
Traditional office culture is on the decline - and on the rise are trailblazing ways to make work more flexible, agile and supportive. This award is to recognise teams that are re-thinking traditional structures and encouraging their members to learn and work in new and exciting ways.
