What is public service, shouldn’t that we ask?
That, every public servant everyday needs to ask
Because surely that drives and informs their task.
Else, they will be up to anything than their real task.
Whether a public servant is at the front or back
Ultimately, there is the public it ought to track
Whether it is satisfied or there is a service slack.
What’s in-between that doesn’t line up is setback.
Any accomplishment that does not have on sight
The public at the very center of often shaky sight
Is nothing but self-service unseen by clouded sight
Even if celebrated by servers to the highest height.
Public service isn’t any work to be done, or undone,
Mechanically as if at the other end after all is done
A counting machine, gone once all services are done.
Public service is a calling with smiling heart it’s done.
Public service is not just about something to count
But a full bundle of experience and things that count
That recipients are simply too glad to others recount
If they are pleased with all the things they think count.
