China is supplementing its national HIV/AIDS plan by partnering with Merck to give some 40,000 people access to anti-retroviral treatment. The $36 million program, funded by Merck, also trains Chinese health professionals to drive innovation in HIV prevention. China faced an AIDS epidemic in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but HIV prevalence is now less than 0.1% – one of the lowest rates in the world.
