A manager launches initiatives and makes decisions, some big, some small. But the employees involved are left confused, asking, β€œπ‘Ύπ’‰π’š 𝒂𝒓𝒆 π’˜π’† π’…π’π’Šπ’π’ˆ π’•π’‰π’Šπ’”?” When they seek clarity, the response is β€œπ‘±π’–π’”π’• 𝒅𝒐 π’˜π’‰π’‚π’• π’šπ’π’–β€™π’“π’† 𝒕𝒐𝒍𝒅. 𝑰 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 π’†π’™π’‘π’π’‚π’Šπ’ π’Žπ’šπ’”π’†π’π’‡.”

𝑳𝒆𝒕’𝒔 π’•π’‚π’Œπ’† 𝒂 π’Žπ’π’Žπ’†π’π’• 𝒕𝒐 π’–π’π’‘π’‚π’„π’Œ 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕.

Leadership is not about issuing instructions in a vacuum. It’s about π’ƒπ’–π’Šπ’π’…π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕, π’„π’“π’†π’‚π’•π’Šπ’π’ˆ π’„π’π’‚π’“π’Šπ’•π’š, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 π’‡π’π’”π’•π’†π’“π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒅 π’π’˜π’π’†π’“π’”π’‰π’Šπ’‘. When people don’t understand why they’re being asked to do something, motivation drops, engagement dwindles, and resistance grows. This isn’t because they’re π’Šπ’π’”π’–π’ƒπ’π’“π’…π’Šπ’π’‚π’•π’†; it’s because human beings are wired to seek π’Žπ’†π’‚π’π’Šπ’π’ˆ and π’„π’π’π’π’†π’„π’•π’Šπ’π’ in their work.

I bet you’ve heard or seen this scenario play out more than once. And it still happens. Why? 𝑩𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 π’˜π’†β€™π’“π’† π’‰π’–π’Žπ’‚π’. Under pressure, it’s easy to default to control instead of communication. But we can do better.

β€œπ‘©π’†π’„π’‚π’–π’”π’† 𝑰 π’”π’‚π’Šπ’… 𝒔𝒐” might feel efficient in the moment, but it creates long-term disengagement. In contrast, explaining the reasoning behind decisions, even briefly, builds π’„π’“π’†π’…π’Šπ’ƒπ’Šπ’π’Šπ’•π’š, 𝒇𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 π’ƒπ’–π’š-π’Šπ’, and π’†π’π’„π’π’–π’“π’‚π’ˆπ’†π’” 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒅 π’π’˜π’π’†π’“π’”π’‰π’Šπ’‘ 𝒐𝒇 π’π’–π’•π’„π’π’Žπ’†π’”. It doesn’t mean every detail must be disclosed, but providing context shows respect for people’s intelligence and contribution.

True leadership invites π’„π’–π’“π’Šπ’π’”π’Šπ’•π’š, not π’„π’π’Žπ’‘π’π’Šπ’‚π’π’„π’†. It involves taking a moment to say, β€œπ‘―π’†π’“π’†β€™π’” π’˜π’‰π’‚π’• π’˜π’†β€™π’“π’† π’…π’π’Šπ’π’ˆ, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 π’˜π’‰π’š π’Šπ’• π’Žπ’‚π’•π’•π’†π’“π’”.” That simple step transforms π’•π’‚π’”π’Œπ’” into 𝒑𝒖𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆-π’…π’“π’Šπ’—π’†π’ π’‚π’„π’•π’Šπ’π’π’”.

If you’re in a leadership role, ask yourself: 𝑨𝒓𝒆 π’Žπ’š π’•π’†π’‚π’Ž π’Žπ’†π’Žπ’ƒπ’†π’“π’” 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 π’…π’π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 π’˜π’π’“π’Œ, 𝒐𝒓 𝒅𝒐 π’•π’‰π’†π’š 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒖𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆 π’ƒπ’†π’‰π’Šπ’π’… π’Šπ’•?
