This video features Alice Kaudia, the first Environmental Secretary in Kenya – where she led the negotiations that resulted in Kenya’s Climate Change Response Strategy from 2010.
In this video, she explains what every public servant can do to convince colleagues and management to put climate change on the agenda, as well as the challenges that may arise in the process.
Climate change is a massive, complex and multi-faceted challenge for governments everywhere, but addressing the effects in each department can be slow or non-existent. Public servants outside of environmental ministries often have limited time to focus on priorities outside of their remit so climate policies are often competing with other actions. But by getting everyone to participate, creating a shared vision, supporting climate sceptics and providing evidence of the negative impacts not only environment departments but all departments, a meaningful shift in priorities can be achieved.
