Kenya and Nigeria are genetically modifying sorghum, a crop 300 million sub-Saharan Africans depend on as their primary calorie source. The African Biofortified Sorghum project is adding vitamin A, zinc, iron and lysine to the crop to ward off preventable diseases like blindness and malaria. Up to half a million children go blind every year due to vitamin A deficiency.
