US cities are posting their restaurant hygiene ratings next to reviews on the hugely popular app Yelp. This lets customers compare the food with the state of the kitchen, and so avoid food poisoning. Conversely, food inspectors can also search the site's user-generated reviews for key words – such as "made me sick" – that imply they should examine a particular eatery.
