Exit Memo: Senior Policy Officer

We asked members of the Apolitical Community to write-up a prospective “exit memo” for their role to increase visibility of the different kinds of work being done across government.

**Your job title: **Senior Policy Officer

How would you describe your job to a friend?

I work for a government department that administers jobs and community development policies and programmes. My area of work is especially interested in how government expenditure on construction, goods and services can be best used to benefit local industry and workers.

What are your daily/weekly/monthly responsibilities?

Writing briefings to our minister on how best to maximise the use of local industry in government procurement, responding to correspondence from constituents, preparing parliamentary responses on these topics, engaging with stakeholders both in and outside of government, and assisting in policy reform efforts.

What does your successor need to know to succeed?

An appreciation of the importance of our work and therefore the need for responsiveness when engaging with stakeholders and for meaningful consultation for everything we do.

What are some current projects you're working on?

The design and copy of our annual report, some policy reform thinking and stakeholder discussion, preparing a draft response from our minister to a constituent on a policy matter, and providing advice to our treasury department on reporting standards.
