Exit Memo: Responsible Business Conduct Lead, Lands and Minerals

We asked members of the Apolitical Community to write-up a prospective “exit memo” for their role to increase visibility of the different kinds of work being done across government.

**Your job title: **Responsible Business Conduct Lead, Lands and Minerals

How would you describe your job to a friend?

I provide technical expertise related to business and human rights, and social and environmental due diligence, for the mining sector. A large component of my work is participation in international working groups dedicated to human rights in mineral supply chains at the operational level, [and] corporate social responsibility and community relations.

What are your daily/weekly/monthly responsibilities?

Responding to briefing requests, international conflict monitoring around Canadian operations, maintaining links with the professional community in responsible business conduct and civil society stakeholders, and providing advice at internal and international-external working group meetings.

What does your successor need to know to succeed?

Constantly stay informed of innovation in the field and the development of new standards. Your technical expertise in social and environmental due diligence will guide your engagement. Nurture a passion for the role of business in promoting human rights and elevating standards for environmental protection so you aren't weighed down by the very real challenges in this space.

What are some current projects you're working on?

Being a representative in conflict resolution at Canada's National Contact Point Secretariat for the OECD. Being a Public Sector Representative of the Cobalt Action Partnership Steering Committee, dedicated to the eradication of forced labour in Cobalt Supply Chains in the DRC. I also sit on the Global Battery Alliance, as part of the Working Group for the Eradication of Forced Labour in Battery Supply Chains. And I serve as an expert on international best practice including the OECD Guidelines for MNEs, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the OECD Due Diligence Guidelines for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals, the Voluntary Principles, the GRI and the IFC Performance Standards.
