We asked members of the Apolitical Community to write-up a prospective “exit memo” for their role to increase visibility of the different kinds of work being done across government.
**Your job title: ** Operational Delivery Team Member Administrative officer
How would you describe your job to a friend?
I am a part of the Rural Payment Agency as an administrative officer, supporting the land-based scheme activity of Countryside Stewardship. Countryside Stewardship scheme is an opportunity for farmers to help protect, enhance, and enrich the environment, while receiving government payments for the land and buildings they maintain. Working as an administrative officer for a government organisation related to funding schemes for farmers is a satisfying job as I am contributing to the environmental improvements of the UK.
What are your daily/weekly/monthly responsibilities?
My everyday work is evaluating farm inspection reports and assessing if farmers are complying with the set rules of their agreements which are meant to protect and enhance the environment. If the farmers were not complying with the set agreement rules, I am applying reductions and penalties to their payment claims.
I am updating the operational systems, spreadsheets and resolving issues. I am contacting agreement holders via email or direct call when the final evaluation of their farm visit is completed, or when more information is required.
As a processor, my main goal is to keep up with the targeted deadline related to the final payments of the claims, so I can deliver excellent customer service, benefit to the environment and the Agency. My monthly responsibilities include also training new and existing colleagues and as a Learning and Development member, I am planning, organising, and delivering events/presentations and supporting colleagues in their development.
What does your successor need to know to succeed?
The success of every individual is something very subjective. The way you understand and see success might be different from how I or someone else sees it. What I mean by this is that it entirely depends on how much you would like to succeed, and how much effort, time, and patience you would invest in the way to the success.
To me, the most important thing is to believe in myself and be able to adapt to every situation that life brings.
Being a part of the UK Civil Service, there are a lot of opportunities which can help you to be successful, however what I have noticed in the past two and a half years is that most of the time these opportunities are not communicated on time or not explained how it will benefit you as an individual. If you would like to know more about UK Civil Service learning and development opportunities, please do contact me and I will do my best to assist you in your way to being successful.
What are some current projects you're working on?
Learning and Development/Operational Delivery Profession – I am preparing presentations for managers regarding learning and development opportunities. I am also working on a way of promoting on a regular basis the Operational Delivery profession qualifications as a part of a learning and development plan.
Future Leaders Academy online course – Working on a cross-governmental project with civil servants from different grades and professions.
