We asked members of the Apolitical Community to write-up a prospective “exit memo” for their role to increase visibility of the different kinds of work being done across government.

**Your job title: **Management Consultant

How would you describe your job to a friend? It's an exciting job because each and every project I work on is with a different division or department that is faced with diverse issues to be tackled together. I use many of my skills, including project management, facilitation and change management to name a few.

What are your daily/weekly/monthly responsibilities? My work is project-based, therefore depending on the project my days/months could look different. My responsibilities include working with the leadership team who are the controllers of my projects, as well as core team members who are SMEs identified when developing the project charter and plan. I am usually the lead on projects and work with many internal and external stakeholders where needed to develop solutions and recommendations.

What does your successor need to know to succeed? You have to be an independent, objective advisor to senior management. Many times, they might not like what you're going to tell them but as long as you support all your recommendations with facts and clear analysis, you should be successful in what you were tasked to do.

What are some current projects you're working on? Projects range from service reviews, process reviews, operational performance reviews and programme development. I just finished a process review in which I used my Lean Black Belt skills and methodology to work with the team to come up with process improvements. I am currently beginning a new project that is cross-divisional and cross-departmental in which I will be leading the team in developing a programme that has clear criteria.
