We asked members of the Apolitical Community to write-up a prospective “exit memo” for their role to increase visibility of the different kinds of work being done across government.

Your Job Title:

Deputy Superintendent of Operations

How would you describe your job to a friend?:

Very challenging at times, but sometimes very rewarding.

What are your daily/weekly/monthly responsibilities?:

Managing the operation of the institution, scheduling and hiring sergeants, hiring overtime to cover off sergeant shifts, approving time off for sergeants, holding Allegation meetings, dealing with stage 2 grievances, dealing with staff conflicts, addressing Workplace Discrimination and Harassment (WDHP) compliants.

What does your successor need to know to succeed?:

To treat staff with respect and dignity. To be open, honest and transparent when dealing with staff. To make them feel inclusive in the decisionmaking on how to operate their units. To let them know that their ideas and concerns matter. Listen actively to them when you are in conversation with them. Provide them with positive constructive feedback. Support, encourage and empower them to be the best that they can be. Always remember that a happy employee is a productive employee.

What are some current projects you're working on?:

Streamlining the roles and responsibilities for the sergeant group. Working with the repopulation committee for OCI. Dealing with approval for early releases of inmates. Making the necessary arrangement for training for sergeants as the need arises.
