Participating states agree to ensure diamonds meet stringent accreditation criteria, and only trade with countries that have also signed up to process. Some 99% of diamonds produced globally are accredited by the Kimberley Process, but critics say that it overlooks critical abuses in the trade and even acts as a “smokescreen” for conflict diamonds.
