Considering communicating is something that we all do, it can be remarkably hard. Differences of opinion on how to communicate can be extremely frustrating, especially if you feel your voice isn't being heard. I thought I'd share some tips to help if you find yourself in this situation.

  1. Take a step back. It's easy to feel overwhelmed in the moment and react on instinct. If you can end a call and re-convene, take a few mindful minutes before continuing.

  2. Don't get stuck with debating specific words/phrases. This can be really tempting but if it's something that you can compromise on because it doesn't change the context of your message, I recommend doing so. It can go a little way towards building trust.

3**. Back up your views with statistics.** If you have data that shows how a particular method of communication works or that a certain viewpoint is effective, make use of this. Sometimes people need concrete evidence, rather than just advice.

  1. Take the small wins. For example, send emails using your own tone and language (provided it's appropriate, of course). Taking some ownership and control of what you can send feels good, especially if you don't feel comfortable with the wider situation.

Most importantly…

  1. Don't let it affect you. Someone disagreeing with you or not listening to your advice is not a critique of your skills and abilities (even though it might feel like it). Sometimes people aren't ready to hear what you have to say but that doesn't mean your voice doesn't deserve to be heard.
