What does a day in your shoes feel like? And what are the key skills that can make or break a career in your field?

We’ve asked a diverse group of Apolitical members to share their career story with us and the tips they have for junior public servants. In this article, an anonymous civil servant explains why it’s important to get straight to the point in their role as a reporting officer.

What is your current role and how do you spend your time on a standard day?

Reporting Officer: Collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing information for use in public reports.

What did you do before taking up this role?

In your opinion, what are the most important skills someone needs to excel in your field?

Organization, time management, professionalism, client service, good communication.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Learning about the different parts of my organization and what we have planned for the coming year, as well as what major accomplishments are achieved.

What advice would you give to new public servants who are interested in a career in your field?

Keeping your message, question or request as short and simple as possible is the best use of everyone's time. People don't want to read through a long email to decipher what action is required from them, nor do they have the time to filter through a lot of information to find the key points buried within.
