What does a day in your shoes feel like? And what are the key skills that can make or break a career in your field?

We’ve asked a diverse group of Apolitical members to share their career story with us and the tips they have for junior public servants. In this article, this anonymous author explains why it’s important to know your strengths - and play to them - in their role as a project support officer.

What is your current role and how do you spend your time on a standard day?

My current role is Project Support Officer. A typical day involves a variety of tasks, working on a range of projects that I either lead or provide support in, and coordinating meetings - including setting agendas, taking minutes etc.

What did you do before taking up this role?

Before taking on this role I worked in project management, research and customer service roles in the 10 years prior.

In your opinion, what are the most important skills someone needs to excel in your field?

Ability to manage your time effectively, prioritise, communicate (verbally and in writing) with stakeholders at all levels.

What is your favourite part of your job?

The variety of tasks and projects that I am working on day-to-day.

What advice would you give to new public servants who are interested in a career in your field?

Know your strengths and select a role that will allow you to showcase these strengths but also allow you to develop your weaknesses.
