Career story: policy analyst, Government of Manitoba

What does a day in your shoes feel like? And what are the key skills that can make or break a career in your field?

We’ve asked a diverse group of Apolitical members to share their career story with us and the tips they have for junior public servants. In this article, Jasmine Au explains why it’s important to have clear, critical thinking and communication in their role as policy analyst.

What is your current role and how do you spend your time on a standard day?

My current role is Policy Analyst with the Government of Manitoba. I spend a lot of time writing and reviewing documents for policy agreements/legislation for our branch. Lots of reading and writing for senior management. Varying tasks come in with tight deadlines and must be actioned appropriately. It all involves consulting with team members across the branch.

What did you do before taking up this role?

I worked for several years in the operations unit of the same branch. I also completed a social science degree prior to starting work for the government.

In your opinion, what are the most important skills someone needs to excel in your field?

Teamwork. Analytical and Critical thinking. Communication (verbal and especially written/writing).

What is your favourite part of your job?

Being involved in reviewing documents to assist senior leaders to make decisions on a higher level.

What advice would you give to new public servants who are interested in a career in your field?

Obtain experience in working with senior leaders and create internal/external formal documentation for your workplace.
