What does a day in your shoes feel like? And what are the key skills that can make or break a career in your field?

We’ve asked a diverse group of Apolitical members to share their career story with us and the tips they have for junior public servants. In this article, Rrona Berisha explains why it’s important to embrace change in their role as a legal advisor.

What is your current role and how do you spend your time on a standard day?

I am a legal advisor and head of the component of Access to Justice. In addition, I also have the role of gender focal point in my organization. My day consists of walking to the office, at least before the Covid-19 saga; having a cup of coffee and discussing ongoing activities - or planning new ones - with my domestic implementation partner.

What did you do before taking up this role?

Previously, I have worked on increasing the capacity of judges and prosecutors through the Kosovo training institution.

In your opinion, what are the most important skills someone needs to excel in your field?

To work in international development, you need a good understanding of the history, culture and mentality of the country you are working for. As a national, this part is easy. As per the professional side, you'll need to have expertise on human rights, access to justice, inclusion and diversity, and knowledge of domestic and international legislation.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Having the possibility to support your country and being able to be an agent of change gives me true satisfaction!

What advice would you give to new public servants who are interested in a career in your field?

Embrace change!
