Career story: learning advisor

What does a day in your shoes feel like? And what are the key skills that can make or break a career in your field?

We’ve asked a diverse group of Apolitical members to share their career story with us and the tips they have for junior public servants. In this article, Krissie Adams explains why it’s important to prioritise teamwork in their role as a learning advisor.

How do you spend most of your time on an average day?

Training staff, completing quality assurance and updating training material for Disability Benefits.

What did you do before?

I was a Benefits Program Officer rendering disability decisions for veterans and serving members of CAF and RCMP.

What are the most important skills someone needs to excel in your field?

Good listening and communication skills, patience, and working well with others.

What's the best part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is helping people grow in their training and in their knowledge to the point where they become independent.

What advice would you give to future public servants interested in a career in your field?

My advice would be to be thirsty for knowledge. Broadening your depth of knowledge and gaining experience in your field can be beneficial as you become a bit more of an expert in your field.

Also, being a great team player is important. We are all here in the public service to serve our vast clientele across the country while representing our respective departments. It is "we" and not "I" when working in the public service and how we as a whole can provide better service to the public.
