What does a day in your shoes feel like? And what are the key skills that can make or break a career in your field?

We’ve asked a diverse group of Apolitical members to share their career story with us and the tips they have for junior public servants. In this article, an anonymous civil servant explains why it’s important to take advantage of educational opportunities in their role as a ​​healthcare program director.

What is your current role and how do you spend your time on a standard day?

I am a program director in a healthcare setting and spend my day overseeing three departments and over 100 employees. This can include data, budget and policy review, implementation of equipment, disciplinary meetings and overseeing projects

What did you do before taking up this role?

I worked as a front line health care worker for 7 years before moving to the private sector as a medical device representative for 8 years before taking on this role.

In your opinion, what are the most important skills someone needs to excel in your field?

Understanding of the political system and how it intersects with the private sector and union contracts.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Successfully implementing new equipment that will impact patient outcomes.

What advice would you give to new public servants who are interested in a career in your field?

Take advantage of any and all education you are provided. Often there are programs offered through your employer that would prepare you to move forward in your career and also learn other perspectives.
