Career story: financial officer

What does a day in your shoes feel like? And what are the key skills that can make or break a career in your field?

We’ve asked a diverse group of Apolitical members to share their career story with us and the tips they have for junior public servants. In this article, Taviwan Sirisakdiwan explains why it’s important to think about what employers look for in their role as a financial officer.

What is your current role and how do you spend your time on a standard day?

My current role is financial officer. I spend my time with financial reconciliations, General Ledger (GL) verification, financial forecasts, accounts receivable management, and financial reporting.

What did you do before taking up this role?

I gained 10 years experience with the BC government managing financial responsibilities. I attended professional financial programmes and related courses. I also attended leadership courses and work management strategies from many social media and web resources.

In your opinion, what are the most important skills someone needs to excel in your field?

An accounting and financial management background. In addition, BC government financial works are unique with specific rules, procedures, and financial policies, which requires specific experiences.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Financial forecasting and GL reconciliation.

What advice would you give to new public servants who are interested in a career in your field?

A few things based on my experiences with the BC government:

• Have an open mind to accept different processes.

• Be open to learn and notice specific key strategies and requirements.

• In order to get into this career, candidates must learn their specific hiring processes and what they look for in a successful candidate.
