Career story: director of strategic communications

What does a day in your shoes feel like? And what are the key skills that can make or break a career in your field?

We’ve asked a diverse group of Apolitical members to share their career story with us and the tips they have for junior public servants. In this article, Cheryl Burnett explains why it’s important to understand the "business" in their role as Director of Strategic Communications.

What is your current role and how do you spend your time on a standard day?

Director of Strategic Communications, Results for America. I manage our local communications, so I am typically working on media outreach, writing content for newsletters, blogs and releases, developing social media posts, preparing speakers for events... and sitting in meetings!

What did you do before taking up this role?

I worked in communications in the public and private sectors, serving as a spokesperson for elected officials, as a department leader in large multinational organizations, and as the corporate lead at a boutique PR agency in London.

In your opinion, what are the most important skills someone needs to excel in your field?

There are tangible skills required - excellent writing is essential, as are presentation skills, organization and management (conflicting priorities), and strategic planning. In addition, the ability to remain calm, juggle a variety of tasks, develop external and internal relationships, and prioritize work are critical.

What is your favourite part of your job?

The variety! No two days have been the same. Managing a crisis, organizing events, writing speeches, creating videos, doing social media, interacting with the media - it is fun! You need to be okay with the plan for your day blowing up by 9 am to manage a crisis or important media inquiry.

What advice would you give to new public servants who are interested in a career in your field?

Listen and learn! Understand the "business", in this case, policy. You do not have to be an expert, but you will gain credibility when you demonstrate interest and acumen. Read everything - it will provide inspiration for innovative new ideas and improve your writing skills.
