What does a day in your shoes feel like? And what are the key skills that can make or break a career in your field?
We’ve asked a diverse group of Apolitical members to share their career story with us and the tips they have for new public servants. In this article, Zipporah Caesar explains why it’s important to be open to learning new things in their role as a clerk.
What is your current role and how do you spend your time on a standard day?
I am a clerk with the anti-fraud department. Most of my days involve preparing files for investigators.
What did you do before taking up this role?
I was a full-time student, and worked retail jobs part-time, usually in public facing customer service.
In your opinion, what are the most important skills someone needs to excel in your field?
Strong organisational and communication skills. Technical skills should always be improved upon, particularly in excel and communication tech.
What is your favourite part of your job?
I especially enjoy learning about the different ways my colleagues pursue their role as investigators. I hope to shadow and learn from them soon.
What advice would you give to young public servants who are interested in a career in your field?
Always be willing to help and take on new tasks. This will help you learn and expand your capabilities and prepare you for roles you may not have considered.
