What’s the best advice you ever received? What tips did you wish you knew earlier? How did this help you on your career journey?

We’ve spoken to members of the Apolitical community to share their top three pieces of career advice with us. In this article, Ben Thompson explains why it’s important to trust your gut in their role as a manager of business transformation.

Your first piece of advice:

Don't go against your gut instinct on a whim - gut instinct is all of your previous experience and learnings informing you. Going against that on a whim usually does not end well!

Your second piece of advice:

Trust your team until they give you a reason not to trust them - a previous manager when I started said: ‘I am not going to micromanage you, I am going to assume that you are following the rules and policies unless you give me a reason not to.’ Start from a position of trust and your team will repay you tenfold.

Your third piece of advice:

Be open to different opportunities - my career has not turned out the way I would have planned or imagined, but would I change it for the world? No! I think of where I thought I would be, to where I am and I could not be happier!
