Career advice from a director of corporate staffing

What’s the best advice you ever received? What tips did you wish you knew earlier? How did this help you on your career journey?

We’ve spoken to members of the Apolitical community to share their top three pieces of career advice with us. In this article, Jonathan Caron explains why it’s important to network in their role as director of corporate staffing.

Your first piece of advice:

You can't sleep fast. Despite all your eagerness, it will still take eight hours to get through your night of sleep. You need to put in the time in order to get it done, same applies with your career.

Your second piece of advice:

Set up a network and tend to it. Use your school, friends and family network to get your work network set up. This is something that will pay dividends rather later in your career and will help you as you get promotions or bigger projects or files. No one expects you to know or do it all; being able to lean on a network that can support you will help you go through those times.

Your third piece of advice:

Don't sweat the small stuff! Things will go sideways, guaranteed! Show your superiors what lessons you have learned and how it will make you better prepared next time. Keep in mind this classic quote: "Will it matter in five days, five months or five years?". Assess it, categorise it and move on!
