An international campaign for handwashing – the world's cheapest form of sanitation – has reached 250 million people in 24 countries through a partnership between governments, NGOs and soap manufacturer Unilever. Trials in Ghana and India found that diarrhoea rates were cut by as much as 25%. The Global Public Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap is spreading the word with a record-breaking international handwashing day, advertising in schools and hospitals, and even printing messages on flatbreads. It hopes to teach 1 billion people about the importance of handwashing by 2020, protecting women and children against diseases like cholera and diarrhoea.
