Now that you understand what considerations to keep in mind when building an online presence, it’s time to get some practice! Read the prompts below and construct a few tweets of your own. These are all ways to create more engaging posts, so feel free to adapt these to your own voice and content.

1. Shoutout to new followers to expand reach

Example: I’d like to welcome @Paula from #Canada to my twitter page, thanks for following me! (make sure to tag them so they see your shoutout)

Now, write your own!

2. Write a tweet that asks your followers to respond to a prompt

Examples:

  • ‘What are some lessons you’ve learned lately? …..#professionaldev’
  • ‘x gets me out of bed in the morning – what about you?’
  • ‘x is an issue I really care about’
  • ‘x is the biggest challenge for 2020’

Try writing one of these yourself – and remember that you’re trying to start a conversation.

3. Write a tweet about breaking news

Pick a story on a Twitter account like @wef or @nesta and write your own tweet based on the original tweet. Try not to copy the title of the article word for word, as this may not be as engaging of a post if it is redundant. Instead, pull a quote/a statistic and use emojis to create a more engaging post. Always share the URL because it is someone else’s story.

Example:

Great read from @bloombergcities on how mayors can strengthen innovation during crisis. @HarvardHBS’s @MitchWei imparts 3 strategies for innovation: ▶️Source ideas widely ▶️Enable experimentation ▶️Scale up buff.ly/3c3bLQ8

4. Now that you have practised writing three Tweets, make sure to share them to your Twitter page, and don’t forget to tag @apoliticalco. Who knows – maybe we’ll retweet it too!
