Agentic AI changes the paradigm. These are autonomous software systems capable of reasoning, making decisions, and executing multi-step tasks with minimal oversight. Imagine an AI agent that doesn’t just draft a response to a citizen’s query about a complex benefit claim, but actively collaborates with other agents to check eligibility criteria, verify data against policy guidance, and propose a final decision for a human caseworker to sign off.

For the public sector, where "doing more with less" is a perennial challenge, this offers a pathway to radical efficiency. It frees our brilliant civil servants from administrative drudgery, allowing them to focus on what humans do best: empathy, judgment, and complex problem-solving.

As stewards of public services, we must ensure that every automated process is fair, accountable, and transparent by design.
