Bangladesh will make it easy for low-income citizens in remote areas to buy goods and services via text message through a new nationwide mobile payments system. More than 70% of the country's population lives in rural areas, where access to formal banking is limited due to distance, high fees and the prevalence of financial illiteracy. The mobile payments system, engineered by Bangladesh's innovation agency, aims to lift rural populations out of poverty by making financial services more readily available.
