Last week, I had the privilege of organising and hosting HM Treasury’s Innovation Day (ID25), where we explored one of the most pressing challenges in technology today: how to balance the drive for AI innovation with the imperative of sustainability.
Reframing the Conversation
The discussion often frames innovation and sustainability as opposing forces – progress versus restraint. At ID25, we challenged that narrative. Innovation and sustainability are not rivals; they are partners. Innovation without sustainability is short-lived, and sustainability without innovation is stagnant.
This is not just an environmental issue. It is about building AI systems that create lasting value, aligning with the UK’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and ensuring economic and technological resilience.
Understanding the Full Impact of Technology
One key insight shared during the event was that most organisations underestimate the environmental impact of technology. While operational energy use gets attention, upstream emissions from hardware manufacturing and software development often account for the majority of the footprint. Recognising this shifts decision-making towards more sustainable practices.
The Reality of Generative AI Models
We also examined the resource intensity of current AI approaches. Many large generative models rely on a “brute force” strategy – massive compute power, high energy consumption, and rapid hardware obsolescence. This is fundamentally unsustainable and raises concerns about transparency, e-waste, and the long-term viability of these systems.
A More Sustainable Path Forward
The event featuring Scott Logic highlighted practical steps for a human-led approach to AI:
- Measure first – Understand lifecycle impacts before scaling solutions.
- Embed sustainability in procurement – Use standards and controls to incentivise greener choices.
- Right-size models – Opt for domain-specific models rather than general-purpose giants.
- Distribute computing – Move towards edge AI and hybrid infrastructure to reduce centralised energy demand.
Edge AI, in particular, offers promise by leveraging existing devices rather than creating new hardware, aligning with circular economy principles and reducing upstream carbon costs.
The UK Opportunity
Far from being a constraint, the UK’s regulatory environment and infrastructure challenges can drive innovation. Our strengths in engineering and scientific excellence position us to lead in developing efficient, transparent, and trustworthy AI systems tailored to specialised domains.
Looking Ahead
The panel discussion led by Scott Logic reinforced three key points:
Sustainability must be integrated from the outset of AI development.
Governance should combine central standards with distributed responsibility.
The UK has a unique opportunity to lead globally in sustainable AI innovation.
Innovation Day 2025 demonstrated that by focusing on measurement, procurement, model design, and distributed computing, we can build AI systems that deliver value while respecting planetary boundaries.
