An Arizona school district has partnered with Data for Social Good to develop a tool that can predict which high school students are most likely to apply for universities they are overqualified for, allowing targeted interventions to take place. Although 95% of Mesa high school students planned on completing university or vocational training, only 25% ended up doing so. The model identified 60 out of 100 students with a significant discrepancy between their SATs and the average scores of their university peers, based on analysis of previous graduates.
