Birmingham recently joined the Urban Transitions Mission (UTM), a global programme focused on sharing ideas and reducing carbon emissions. We kicked off our partnership formally on the 19th May, when the council hosted an international group of city officials from Brazil, Turkey and Moldova as part of UTM. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase Birmingham’s climate action while learning from global partners. 

The day began at the Council House, where colleagues presented key initiatives to reduce emissions. This included a deeper look at the district heat network, the city’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, and the challenges and ambitions around retrofit.

The group also heard from Novoville about their digital platform, Shared Works, which helps coordinate energy efficiency upgrades by connecting councils, contractors and residents. We’re proud that our partnership with Novoville has been shortlisted for ‘Collaboration of the Year’ at the Unlock Net Zero Awards.

 The group then visited Voltempo at Tyseley Energy Park. The Birmingham-based company is developing the UK’s largest HGV-only EV charging network, a significant step toward reducing transport emissions.

 Next, the visit continued at MECC Trust, a local organisation supporting residents through financial advice, energy support and wellbeing programmes. Their work highlights the vital role community-led initiatives play in building a sustainable city. Projects include warm home referrals and access to Household Support Funds, alongside a range of ongoing support services.

 The visit concluded with a walking tour of Birmingham, taking in landmarks such as the Library of Birmingham and Ozzy the Bull, as well as major developments including HS2 Curzon Street Station and the new BBC Birmingham HQ at the Tea Factory. A touch of rain and lively discussion ensured a true Brummie experience.
